It is not only a result of material science, but also a product of the wisdom embedded in modern safety regulations. Next, let us uncover the secrets behind it.

1、Why Do We Need Plastics That “Know How to Resist Fire”?

Due to their advantages in lightweighting, ease of processing, and high freedom in structural design, plastics have long become indispensable materials in modern industrial systems. However, it must be acknowledged that:

Most conventional plastics are inherently combustible and can generate large amounts of smoke and toxic gases during combustion.

In fire scenarios, the truly fatal factors are often not the flames themselves, but high-temperature smoke, asphyxiating gases, and failed evacuation caused by rapidly reduced visibility. Therefore, the engineering goal of flame-retardant materials is not to achieve the unrealistic concept of “completely non-combustible”, but rather to control combustion behavior in a predictable and manageable way through material design and system optimization:

They need to be more difficult to ignite, avoiding premature combustion under abnormal conditions such as short circuits, overloads, or localized overheating; even if ignition occurs, they should self-extinguish quickly after the fire source is removed instead of continuing to support combustion; the flame propagation rate must be significantly reduced to provide valuable time for evacuation and emergency response;

At the same time, smoke density and toxicity should be minimized as much as possible to reduce secondary hazards.

From an engineering perspective, the essence of flame-retardant plastics is the delay and reduction of uncontrolled risks.

2、How Does Flame Retardancy Actually “Work”?

Many people assume that flame-retardant materials mean “non-combustible”, but this is not the case. The goal of flame retardancy is to delay combustion, reduce flame propagation, and minimize the generation of toxic smoke. It is a comprehensive approach targeting the chain reactions involved in combustion.

Based on material design approaches, flame-retardant plastics can be classified into two categories: intrinsic flame-retardant plastics (with flame-retardant groups in the polymer structure) and additive flame-retardant plastics (with externally added flame retardants).

● Intrinsic flame-retardant plastics:
Refers to polymer materials containing flame-retardant atoms or groups in the main chain or side chains of the polymer (such as nitrogen, silicon, phosphorus, and halogen elements). When the polymer material undergoes combustion under heat exposure, these atoms undergo chemical reactions and generate non-combustible gases, thereby suppressing flame propagation.

● Additive flame-retardant plastics:
This approach improves the flame-retardant performance of polymer materials by physically adding flame retardants into polymers that originally have no flame-retardant properties or insufficient flame resistance. The flame-retardant effect of these additives enhances the flame resistance of polymer materials. (Flame retardants commonly used in flame-retardant polymer materials can be classified into organic flame retardants, inorganic flame retardants, and composite flame retardants.)

Common flame-retardant mechanisms can generally be divided into three categories:

1、Gas-phase flame retardancy: Interrupting chain combustion reactions

After thermal decomposition, flame retardants release non-combustible inert gases that dilute combustible gases or reduce the oxygen supply required for combustion.

2、Condensed-phase flame retardancy: Carbonized layer providing heat and oxygen insulation

During combustion, a carbonized protective layer forms on the material surface, providing heat insulation and oxygen barrier effects while delaying combustion.

3、Endothermic flame retardancy: Absorbing heat to suppress combustible gas generation

Flame retardants undergo strong endothermic reactions, absorbing part of the heat released during combustion, lowering the surface temperature of combustible materials, and effectively suppressing the generation of combustible gases, thereby interrupting the combustion cycle.

In practical applications, these three mechanisms often work together to build a more effective flame-retardant system.

3、How Are Flame-Retardant Grades Evaluated?

——Understanding Flame-Retardant “Behavior” Through UL94 Testing

Flame-retardant performance is not determined through subjective judgment, but measured through standardized and repeatable scientific tests. Among them, the UL94 vertical burning test is one of the most commonly used methods for evaluating the flame-retardant performance of engineering plastics.

During the test, a plastic specimen of standard dimensions is vertically suspended. A specified flame is applied to the bottom of the specimen for 10 seconds and then removed. Key behaviors such as afterflame time, whether burning drips occur, and whether the drips ignite the cotton placed underneath are recorded.

Based on the test results, common ratings include (from high to low):

V-0: Afterflame time ≤ 10 seconds, and burning drips are not allowed to ignite the cotton indicator. It is one of the commonly required flame-retardant grades for critical components in electronics, electrical applications, automotive systems, and other fields.

V-1: Afterflame time ≤ 30 seconds, and burning drips are also not allowed to ignite the cotton indicator.

V-2: Afterflame time ≤ 30 seconds, but burning drips are allowed, and these drips may ignite the cotton indicator, resulting in a higher risk of flame propagation.

HB: A horizontal burning rating requiring the material’s burning rate to remain below a specified value or for the material to self-extinguish within a defined length. It is the lowest flame-retardant requirement level within the UL94 system.

In addition, UL94 includes higher-level tests such as 5VA and 5VB, which use higher-energy flames and more severe combustion conditions to evaluate the material’s fire resistance and structural integrity under direct flame exposure.

However, flame-retardant grades should not simply be considered as “the higher, the safer”.Different components face different heat sources, failure modes, and consequences.

In critical positions, higher-grade flame-retardant materials may be selected; while for components with relatively controllable risks, excessive pursuit of flame-retardant ratings may compromise mechanical performance, processing stability, or even introduce new risks.

A truly scientific flame-retardant design is about applying the right grade in the right location. Standards are only the starting point for flame-retardant materials entering the market, but they are not the final destination. Real operating environments remain the ultimate test.

4、阻燃不能靠“碰运气”，安全不能靠“侥幸心理”

From material procurement to final product use, every stage requires careful consideration. The selection of flame-retardant materials, evaluation of operating environments, and standardized operation all require rigorous data support and scientific judgment. Any compromise on safety performance may result in consequences far beyond the initial cost when accidents occur.

In industrial safety management, there is no room for chance. Only systematic and strictly controlled flame-retardant strategies can provide truly reliable protection for users and the environment.

In many fire incidents, improper material selection, ignored safety design, and simplified testing procedures are often not the direct causes of ignition, but they become key factors that accelerate flame spread and amplify casualties and losses — especially in high-risk application scenarios such as electrical equipment, building components, and public facilities.

Whether materials possess genuine, stable, and sustainable flame-retardant capabilities often determines whether an accident can be “controlled” or becomes “amplified”.

International mainstream standards include the IEC 60695 series (fire hazard testing) (equivalent to GB/T 5169), UL94 (plastic flammability standard), FMVSS 302 (flammability characteristics of automotive interior materials), EN 45545 (railway applications), and FAR 25.853 in aviation fields. Different standards correspond to different ignition sources — such as needle flame, horizontal/vertical flame, and glow-wire tests — reflecting the thermal stress scenarios that materials may encounter in real applications.

Flame retardancy is not only a compliance requirement, but also a safeguard for life. Therefore, “flame retardancy” is never an optional item or a requirement merely written in standard documents; it represents the fundamental respect and responsibility for life and public safety.

5、Responsibility Comes First, Safety Has No Price

Flame-retardant materials are not decorative features, but a bottom line for protecting lives.

Every material selection is not only about achieving compliance, but also about practicing responsibility toward safety and professionalism.

WDF continues to advance innovation in halogen-free flame-retardant materials, using professional expertise to safeguard every critical safety application.

",
