Bringing Industrial Scrap Back into the Value Chain — WDF’s PIR Recycling Solution


Against the backdrop of the continuous advancement of the circular economy concept, WDF is steadily expanding its sustainable material solutions in the field of engineering plastics.

Focusing on full lifecycle material management, WDF has officially established its industrial-focused PIR (Post-Industrial Recycled) mechanical recycling service based on its deep expertise in PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) material technologies. Leveraging its technical capabilities across multiple material systems, WDF has extended its PIR recycling services to various engineering plastics, including PK (Polyketone), PA, and others, providing customers with more comprehensive circular material solutions.

PIR (Post-Industrial Recycled):

Based on production scrap generated from customer manufacturing lines, including sprues, runners, and molded edge trims, PIR materials undergo standardized collection, sorting, and re-compounding processes, allowing materials to re-enter the value chain and achieve resource reuse and performance rebalancing.

PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled):

Derived from discarded plastics from consumer applications (such as packaging and finished products), PCR materials undergo strict pre-treatment and modification processes to ensure stable material performance. They can be used in high-quality injection molding or modified material applications, enabling closed-loop transformation from discarded products into high-performance new materials.

By integrating PIR and PCR, WDF is building a dual-route circular material system covering both industrial and consumer ends, forming a full lifecycle material strategy from production to consumption.

WDF has established a traceable PIR recycling and reuse process. Through raw material source management, batch identification, and performance data recording, WDF ensures controllable quality and stable output of recycled materials. At the technical implementation level, the solution achieves high-quality transformation through a systematic process:

(1)Diversified Raw Material Selection:

A multi-level screening mechanism is established at the raw material stage. Production scrap such as sprues is collected from customers that meet WDF’s strict standards, covering various mainstream engineering plastic systems including PK and PA. Source management and batch tracking are implemented to ensure the stability and traceability of recycled raw materials.

(2)Refined Recycling and Modification:

Leveraging WDF’s professional modification technologies, strict removal of metal contaminants, additive formulation optimization, and extrusion pelletizing processes are implemented to ensure that each batch of recycled materials maintains good consistency in flowability, mechanical strength, and color appearance.

(3)Full-Process Quality Assurance:

All PIR recycled grades are incorporated into the same production and quality control system as virgin materials. Key performance indicators are tested and recorded, providing reliable assurance for customers to smoothly introduce PIR materials into existing manufacturing processes.

Based on this foundation, WDF can also provide customers with a closed-loop service model of “targeted collection – reprocessing – reuse.” Through dedicated collection and customized pelletizing of production scrap from customer production lines, materials can circulate within the same product system, maximizing the stability of material sources and performance compatibility.

03 Sustainable Development Path

Throughout specific project implementation, WDF always takes end-use performance and compliance requirements as the foundation. According to product functional requirements, appropriate recycled content ratios are determined, while material evaluation, formulation optimization, and injection molding validation are carried out through technical collaboration to promote the steady application of circular materials in structural and functional components.

From an environmental perspective, PIR mechanical recycling can reduce industrial waste while lowering the proportion of virgin materials used, providing a practical pathway for optimizing product carbon footprints. Combined with the continuous expansion of the PCR system, WDF is building a circular material framework that integrates both consumer and industrial ends, enabling recycled materials to become not merely a standalone solution, but an important component of corporate sustainability strategies.

In the future, WDF will continue to strengthen its recycling process capabilities, expand the range of applicable materials and application scenarios, explore combined application pathways for PIR and PCR, and gradually improve circular material solutions according to the needs of different regional markets.
